Gate of Mercy was commissioned by Joram van Ketel and Iddo van der Giessen.
It was made possible with the financial support of Stichting Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinckprijs and Hendrik Mullerfonds.
This grandiose piece, tells the story of The Golden Gate or Gate of Mercy in Jerusalem.
Through decades this gate has been used to offer access into the city.
In Jewish tradition, the Messiah will enter through this gate. Christians and Muslims believe that this was the gate through which Jesus entered Jerusalem.
Another Arabic Name is the Gate of Eternal Life.
It must be said, that the Gate of Mercy has been of importance for every religion, culture, population,… It has been sealed since 1541, the most recent of several sealings.
Throughout the piece, you can here christian, jewish and islamic musical influences.
All in one piece, all in harmony.
Let’s hope one day the gate will be open again for all religion, culture and population.
